Social work is an essential part of the welfare structures of contemporary democratic societies. Its history as a profession dates back to the late 19th century, but its establishment as an academic discipline within higher education is much more recent. Nevertheless, it is emerging as a discipline, particularly with the development of the European Higher Education Area. Furthermore, it is a profession-oriented discipline and a cornerstone of the public social services system that has been built up since the inception of the current social and democratic state governed by the rule of law.
Those working in social work within the healthcare sector can carry out their duties across the three levels that make up the National Health Service: primary care in health centres; specialist care in hospitals and specialist centres – with a particular focus on mental health services, addiction care and palliative care; and social and healthcare services.
